Life can be hard in the Californian desert, but many plants and animals are adapted to survive the hot, dry conditions. Jackrabbits, owls, hummingbirds, and the green stick tree all thrive in this harsh climate as they wait for the rare blessing of rain.

The harbor seals gather in a sheltered cove to give birth. But even hidden from predators, there is no guarantee of survival, and we witness the tragic death of one newborn that gets trapped in its amniotic sac. Within a few hours, the pups that survive the birth are already into the waves, getting to know their new watery world.

Off the coast of California, an island of floating kelp provides refuge for fish in the open waters. The many small fish then attract larger species, including the ocean sunfish that seek relief from their parasites, and the predatory blue shark.

Traditionally, anaerobic digester systems have not been practical on small dairy farms, but this didn’t stop Sensenig Dairy, a 100-cow farm, from pursuing its goal. Then Sensenig teamed up with the local community to collect enough waste to produce 1,401,600 kilowatt hours of electricity per year from "trash" that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

World Wildlife Fund: Making sustainability a priority, the Marshik Dairy — a fifth-generation family farm — implemented a new, technologically advanced and energy efficient barn design for their 155 cows. The new design included robotic milking facilities, energy efficient lighting and ventilation, and renewable wind and solar power.

The group is concerned about global and environmental issues. They want to take action, but must find a base to work from. Meanwhile, off the coast of Brittany, a new environmental disaster is occurring...

Maestro listens as the kids tell him about all the things they see going wrong in the world, their fears, and their frustration that so little is being done. He wants to know if they have any solutions.

Maestro shows what can happen at conferences on the environment, where the blame is passed from person to person and little is resolved. But he also sees the necessity of paying attention to such issues, and encourages the kids to continue with their own plans to promote change.

Traveling aboard the flying globe that Maestro himself has invented, the young environmentalists set out to see the situation in other parts of the world up close.

Maestro takes the kids across the world to show them what is being done to deal with the worst issues related to waste and pollution.

The kids are frustrated with how slow things seem to be progressing, but Maestro boosts their enthusiasm with some good news: Their search for a workspace is over, and a new environmental movement is born — The Guardians of the Planet!

It’s very warm for November, and the kids are playing outside. They’re convinced that the greenhouse effect is responsible for the unusual weather, and think it could make a good subject for the next issue of their newspaper.
