Folk singer-songwriter Tom Paxton wrote this lament in the sixties. It was perhaps his best-known song and was made famous in its day by singers such as Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, Joan Baez, as well as the groups Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio.
